The Waiho River, which loosely translates as ‘smoky waters’, flows from Franz Josef Glacier to the Tasman Sea. Legend has it that the river was formed from the tears of Hinehukatere, frozen in a glacier. In ancient times she was mountain-climbing with her beloved, Wawe, and witnessed him fall to his death.
