Hokitika was officially gazetted as a port on 8 March 1865 and work soon began on building a signal station at the river entrance.

A combination of raised balls, coloured flags and painted arms were used to inform the waiting ships of the prevailing conditions to guide them in safely over the hazardous sand bar and through the ever changing river channels.
